VP:

Welcome Store Managers. On behalf of the company president, I want to thank you for applying for the district manager’s position. We appreciate it very much when our lower level managers aspire to an upper management position, for it is such aspiration that helps our company beat our competitors.

I would like to clarify that you have understood the rules for this interview process. You know that we are putting you together to brag up your store’s financial statistics?

Jack

I’m ready to brag for my store!

Andrea

I’ve been practicing my bragging for a week, so I’m ready.

Mike

My wife says I brag too much, so I should be natural to get the promotion.

VP

And we will go through each grocery store department, one-by-one. Each of you will be given one chance to brag about your best statistic in that department. After you give that statistic, the other two managers can ask you one question—and one question only—about that statistic. From the answer, your competitors can compare your performance with their performance. The store that provides the best statistic for that department wins the point for each department. The manager with the most points at the end of the interview gets the district manager’s job. Are you ready to go?

Jack

Yep!

Andrea

I think you should just give me the job now. My store is the best store in the district.

Mike

Can you believe this? Andrea thinks she already has the job in her pocket. Let’s go. I’m ready to out brag her.

VP

This sounds like we are going to have a great contest. . . . . . Oh, one more thing. The company auditor is listening to this interview and has all the financial information from each of your stores. If he hears any of you providing false information about your store, you will automatically be disqualified.

Jack

I always tell the truth.

Andrea

But my truth is better than your truth. Just wait and see.

Mike

The real truth is that my store is the best store in the district. And that means I deserve to be the next district manager.
